Rantings

Hello fellow nonconformists....

Good to see that I am not the only one walking around with mild anti-mormon sentiments stemming from traumatic childhood experiences with those of the "dominant faith." It wasn't so much the things they said as the things they didn't say. I was an outcast because I didn't belong to the WARD.

I was out of place until I went to private school (high school years), then amazingly I felt like a real person again.

I keep trying to escape the Land of Zion but with a husband, jobs, house, two kids, it's very difficult. I will probably die here and they will bury me in my old "Anywhere but BYU" t-shirt.

'Preciate ya!

I'm with you. And if they baptise me for the dead, I'm coming back and haunting their asses.

I have to appreciate the resolve of those of you who stayed. I couldn't handle it. There's just so much I've learned and done outside of Utah that couldn't have happened cruising State street or fishing for perch every weekend.

Believe me, I would have escaped long ago if it had seemed feasible.

When I left Utah, I hated myself because I couldn't understand why I had such a propensity for violence. Then I visited years later, and whadda ya know, an old friend of mine and I were summoned into a fist fight with a couple teenagers. We laughed at them and walked away.

Then another visit, another violent experience. Then again. I'm sure it has to do with the insurmountable boredom of growing up in a cultureless void, because I don't expect some idiot to walk up to me looking for a fight just about anywhere else.

Alas, I did escape but work, and family, has dragged me back after 10 years.

For the last 10 years I've been living in Seattle/Redmond and coming back to SLC has been painful for me.

In southern Utah, when the Moron missionaries come to your door, Ther're selling PROTECTION. I offer the text of a recent letter to the Mayor of Parowan (spit!)

    Mayor Smith

After thirteen years of residence in Parowan, I find myself growing a bit weary of the "hometown hospitality" offered by some of its inhabitants. My family and I have endured nearly constant un-neighborly conduct and repeated acts of vandalism on our property since our arrival in 1992. We have tried to remain patient and philosophical while fences have been destroyed, nails have been put under tires (in our driveway), bicycles have been stolen, our dogs openly taunted to the point of distraction... the list goes on. This morning, I found the outside mirror of my car ripped off - the vehicle was in my driveway. We have had the local police look into some of these events, but nothing is ever resolved.

My wife and I are not of Utah heritage and we do not embrace the locally-predominant religious faith. We are not surprised to find that this works against our acceptance here - but we endeavor to be a positive influence, contributing time and funds to local efforts when called upon and by treating others fairly and pleasantly. I can think of nothing that should earn us this kind of treatment. Were it not for my employment at Brian Head Resort (the reason we came), we would probably just give up and leave.

To be sure, the physical aspect of this annoyance is visited on us by groups of young people - quite late at night. Please understand that I realize we were all once children and at one time or another did things of which we should not be proud - but this has gone too far. In such a place as Parowan
    - far removed from the general nastiness and decay of the cities - I would think that parents would exercise a more civil level of control over their children.

Sir, I believe it is my right to expect some kind of action to control at least the physical damage to my property - perhaps by regular visits to our subdivision by an on-duty officer. As a public official, it is certainly within your power - if not your sworn responsibility - to make some effort to end this ongoing problem. In the meantime, I will remain as patient and positive as I can.

    Thank you for your time,

My hat is off to you Bud. You certainly handled that more civilly than I would have, myself. Hang in there, you do us all proud.

      Three words....
      Night Vision Camera!
You could actually set it up inside your car, since it sounds like all damage has been external.
      good luck
